Richard Hitchcock b.1753 | Our knowledge of
the lives of our ancestors in the 18th.century, Elizabeth, Richard and
Peter is exclusively from parish registers. Apparently the
Hitchcocks, at least those we know to be our relatives, were too poor to
need to make wills.
In the 19th.century we have a variety of sources. Parish registers still provided the bulk of our evidence but clearly we also have the census returns from 1841 to 1891 and civil registration in Britain started in 1837. There is also evidence from burgess lists, voters lists, apprentice indenture lists, muster rolls and a number of trade and town directories. Towards the end of the century we even have photographs. |
